Stylistics is that branch of language study which brings techniques and concepts in modern linguistics to the analysis of texts. Although orientated towards the study of language, this stylistics course also seeks to bridge the gap with the study of literature and therefore draws heavily on a variety of literary texts.
The course works from the assumption that literary expression is a creative exploitation of the resources of the language that we use from day to day. As well as analysing different genres and registers of everyday language, the course examines the language of poetry, prose and plays.
The course has two main interrelated objectives. The first is to do with the structure and function of language, and works on the basis that by looking at what writers do, we can find out about language. The second is to do with literary interpretation, and works on the basis that by looking at language, we can find out about what writers are doing.
Oral skills will be sharpened by participation in seminar discussions and by making a presentation to the seminar group. Research skills will be improved by preparing written, assessed essays.
Students will be encouraged to use linguistic analysis as a means of gaining new insights into a work, and as a way of supporting their intuitive responses to a work. To this end, students should be able to develop a principled method of working from text, through analysis, to interpretation.
Assessment Methods, and their relation to Learning Outcomes: The essays will be mostly focused on stylistic analysis of a literary work prose, poetry or drama written in class at the end of each term, though they will require students to be familiar with some of the problematic aspects of terms and concepts traditionally used in stylistics.
In addition to this assessed work, all students will be required to give a minute oral presentation to their seminar group.
This is aimed both to air their ideas with peers, and to develop confidence in public speaking. The oral presentation is non-assessed, and the material may be used in essays.
